A Candy Maker's Witness

There are many things that witness of Christ especially this time of year. I like the story "Teach the Children" that takes a common holiday items (ie: bell, ribbon, candle, etc) and helps kids refocus on Christ. This "story" is along the same line.

A Candy Maker's Witness

A candy maker in wanted to make a candy that would be a witness of his faith, so he created the Christmas Candy Cane as a witness of Jesus Christ.

He began with a stick of pure white hard candy. White to symbolize the purity and sinless nature of Christ, hard to symbolize the foundation of the Church, and the firmness of the promises of God.

The candy maker made the candy in the form of a "J" to help us remember the name of Jesus. It is also in the shape of a shepherd's staff. Jesus is our shepherd and we are his flock
The red stripe represents the blood he shed for each one of us on the cross, so we can have eternal life.

The flavoring used for this candy was peppermint, which is similar to Hyssop. Hyssop is of the mint family and was used in the Old Testament for purification and sacrifice.

As time passed the original meanings have been lost. Perhaps this story of the origin of the "candy cane" will help you to witness the wonders of God's Gift at this blessed time of year.
